I think that Tupac’s life experience and poetry is very important for lawyers as it is can be used as a form of expression that makes it ‘easier’ to understand what people of colour and young black men specifically experience and the obstacles may be more likely to face throughout their lives. I think that often times with bad life experiences people feel the need to put it in neat little packages in order to it to be easily understood by other people. I think Tupac’s poetry is interesting too because he doesn’t expect the reader to feel sorry for him, he just tends to state his life experience as facts because it’s all he has ever known. This is useful for lawyers to read because it is a brutally honest, gritty and accurate portrayal of his life. His poetry offers a deep and sensitive insight into the life of a young black man who was let down by society and describes his efforts to make his way through a system that was never built for him. In addition, due to the negative and biased media portrayals I think that it is not often people will get a real insight into the difficulties people of colour face when living in a racist society. Not only that, but also not enough appreciation is given to the strength that develops because of that. Tupac gives an excellent description of the strength and perseverance and this goes against some of the stereotypes that are perpetuated specifically with the criminalisation and higher sentencing of black people and black men in particular again. If lawyers are conscious of their potential biases then they can make a conscious effort to avoid bias in their work.
