I believe that understanding the life experience of Tupac Shakur is very important for lawyers, and that his poetry is a great medium through which one can better understand his life. His collection of poetry in The Rose That Grew From Concrete not only shows the perspective of a Black man in America contextualizing and grappling with the brutality and violence of racism, but also of a Black man’s pride and perseverance in the face of such brutality. I think his poems that were full of love and passion also helped to provide a more complete picture of who he was as a person, which is particularly important for a public figure that’s been demonized in the media as much as Tupac. Through a deeper understanding of his life, lawyers can be encouraged to challenge any previous biases held towards him as a person and, hopefully, encouraged to challenge other biases as well.
